Fire departments from across Canada came together September 12&13 to raise funds and awareness for volunteer firefighters by participating in The Fire Within's third annual Heroes In the Sky event.

Along with a very successful weekend that raised nearly $200,000 for the participating fire departments, this event gave firefighters a chance to connect with the public, share some information on fire prevention, and have a lot of FUN!

HEROES IN THE SKY 2009 REACHES NEW HEIGHTS!

Firefighters are keeping it hot! The one comment that kept repeating over this year’s Heroes In the Sky event was “It’s really HOT up here”. From BC to PEI and NS, the weather was fantastic, lending itself to some very interesting tan lines.

Different methods of keeping cool were employed from one end of the country to the other – from dunk tanks to water balloons to “hydrating stations”, each department seemed to have a preferred method of beating the heat. Although it appears in Morinville, they just like to cuddle. Or hide under the tent. Those two events might be somehow linked…

Redwood Meadows appeared to be the winner of the “best cooks” award based on the pictures they sent of their meals – complete with a full patio set including an umbrella.  All that great food did seem to hinder their dancing – I can’t think of any other excuse for those moves.

Priddis definitely had the scariest calendar holder.

The witch was frightening too.

Waaaay out east, Mira Road set up their Heroes event in Sydney, NS and managed to convince a local radio station to punish one of the DJ’s by having him stay on the roof with them over night.  They even made some calls to the western Heroes departments on the air. It must have taken a lot of editing to make those suitable for the public.

By the way the

VX demonstrations

in the Canadian

Tire Parking lot

were a nice touch

and really drew a

crowd.

I have also just been informed that the local DJ who slept with the boys on Mira Road has asked the chief to join the department!!! (Not sure what happened up there?)

Heroes is about so much more

than the money and this

is an excellent example

of how.

It remains to be

seen however if his

dedication will extend

to a haircut.

Also in Nova Scotia, Windsor FD put on a great event that included the opportunity to dunk the firefighters with the purchase of a calendar (yes, even the CHIEF – thanks Scott!). We will talk about water displacement and that nasty color of the water later!!!   Scott got the last laugh when they all got soaked anyway in the rain the next day.

Not a word was heard from Ponoka over the weekend. Since they managed to get rid of 682 calendars, it would appear that they were too busy SELLING CALENDARS to communicate – not a bad trade off!

Fort Macleod had the same hot weather on the rooftop – apparently heat stroke can cause certain people to break out in a topless Irish jig. Unfortunately (or fortunately?), no video or photo evidence is available of this peculiar sounding event.

In Weberville, it was really hot. And it was hot. So far all we’ve heard from them is that is was hot. Oh and fun. That’s important. Apparently there is video evidence of this event, but it has yet to surface...

Glace Bay, NS had by far the best calendar Jig Chad had ever seen.  It was so good in fact that it made the Heroes in the Sky Highlight reel which can be seen on YouTube
